St. Vincent Ferrer — Missionary Preacher and Wonder-Worker
Vincent Ferrer (1350–1419) was a Spanish Dominican friar whose fiery preaching, miraculous powers, and apostolic zeal made him one of the most influential evangelizers of the late medieval Church.
The Life
Born in Valencia, Spain, Vincent entered the Dominican Order and became a master of theology at the University of Lérida. He initially served as an inquisitor but abandoned that role to become a traveling preacher. For nearly 20 years, he crisscrossed Europe—Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy, and the Low Countries—drawing massive crowds and converting thousands of Jews, Muslims, and heretics to the faith.
His Preaching and Miracles
Vincent’s sermons were legendary for their power and clarity. He spoke in the local vernacular (not Latin), making the Gospel accessible to ordinary people. Crowds numbering in the thousands gathered to hear him. He was reported to have worked miracles—healings, raising the dead, and supernatural signs—that authenticated his mission.
His Legacy
Vincent died in Vannes, France, in 1419 and was canonized by Pope Callixtus III in 1455. He is the patron saint of plumbers and builders (because of the water imagery in his preaching about spiritual cleansing) and is invoked for headaches.
His feast day is April 5.
