What are Lay Dominicans?

We are ordinary lay people with a desire to grow in our faith by living in the spirit of the Dominican order through prayer, study, community, and apostolate. We meet monthly to pray together and share the fruits of our study. We also pray for one another’s needs, and participate in activities to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ in our community.

Who was Saint Dominic?

Born of noble parents in Spain in 1170 A.D., Dominic grew up to become a priest. At that time, the Albigensian heresy was sweeping Europe. Dominic’s holiness, his gift for preaching, and his simple way of life proved effective at combatting the heresy and winning people back to the true faith. In time, he founded a religious order devoted to preaching the gospel for the salvation of souls—the Order of Friars Preachers. He also founded convents for nuns and inspired lay followers. His efforts helped revitalize the church in a time of great turmoil. Today, Dominican friars, sisters and lay members continue his mission to win souls for Christ.

What is the mission of Dominicans?

St. Dominic taught his followers that effective preaching required constant prayer and a genuine love for souls. He also recognized the need for careful study and deep contemplation. The Dominican motto — To praise, to bless, and to preach — sums up this mission. Dominicans seek to hand on to others the fruits of their contemplation.

What does “Mater Dei” mean?

“Mater Dei” is Latin for one of the names by which we honor Mother Mary — Mother of God. Dominicans have a deep love for the Virgin Mary and her Holy Rosary, which is seen as a powerful weapon for the conversion of souls.

How do Lay Dominicans live?

Lay Dominicans live in the world, striving to be witnesses to the saving love of Jesus Christ. We commit to praying daily the Liturgy of the Hours and the Rosary for the forgiveness of sin and for the needs of others. We also set aside time for regular study of the Catholic faith and service to others.
