St. Pier Giorgio Frassati: The “Man of the Eight Beatitudes”
Pier Giorgio Frassati was a young Italian layman—university student, mountain climber, social activist—who lived the Gospel with radical joy and died a saint at age 24.
The Man
Born in Turin, Italy, in 1901, Pier Giorgio was the son of a wealthy industrialist family. But wealth never distanced him from Christ or from the poor. He was handsome, athletic, cheerful—a mountaineer who loved scaling Alpine peaks—and utterly devoted to serving the suffering.
He was not a priest or a religious; he was a student of engineering and geology who joined the St. Vincent de Paul Society and worked tirelessly to feed the hungry, visit the sick, and care for those abandoned by society. He attended daily Mass, prayed the rosary, and lived the Beatitudes with concrete action.
His Witness in Life
Pier Giorgio embodied a radical truth: holiness is not for the cloister alone. It belongs to the young, the unmarried, the active, the joyful. He danced and climbed mountains while serving the poorest of the poor. He showed that sanctity and happiness are not opposites—they are companions.
He was a member of the Catholic Action movement and threw himself into apostolic work with the same passion he brought to mountaineering. He visited slums, tended to cholera victims, and befriended prostitutes with dignity and respect. He saw Christ in every face.
His Death & Canonization
In 1925, at age 23, Pier Giorgio contracted polio (likely from the unsanitary conditions where he served the poor). He died on July 4, 1925, after a brief illness. His parents did not know the extent of his charitable work until after his death, when hundreds came to his funeral—the poor he had served.
He was beatified in 1990 by Pope John Paul II. His feast day is celebrated on July 4.
